There's quite a process for some of the effects you can get from one flattened image.. inverting it and setting to difference layer mode, bringing up the saturation to 100% then setting it as luminosity, etc..
But it starts with adding "noise" to the brush in the brush options. Mess around with photoshop- theres all sorts of stuff you can do!
